David Goldstrom of Eurosport TV

Getting main stream media onside is a major asset in growing the sport of Olympic weightlifting. David Goldstrom over the last 20 or so years is the best professional media person to make this happen.
Kudos to David Goldstrom who brings Olympic weightlifting to life in his broadcasts of european and world championships. I hope he’s here to stay. He works probably harder than anyone, he’s the guy orchestrates the production days and many hours before the 1 st lifter touches the stage. I know he doesn’t like fanfare so I had to sneak a pic of him at work a few days before the 2009 worlds. He has wisely selected some fairly entertaining sidekicks like David Morgan in the past and now Randy Strossen. I’m looking forward to their commentary on Eurosport.

Salimikordasiabi Behdad IRI +105kg and the rest of the category

Salimikordasiabi (21 yrs old) would be the overwhelming favorite to win the +105kg category.  The closest contender would be Chigishev RUS  (32 yrs old), he’s a personal favorite but I believe the 10 extra years  of wear and tear on his body is taking a toll. Chigishev is unfortunately not entered in Paris, too bad.  Another old timer is Udachyn URK (31yrs old) he surprised me in Antalya ,by being very adept and agile despite his rather growing girth. The older Russian texts suggest that +105kg lifters take a little longer to mature and may reach their prime in their early 30’s. Do you chose youth over experience? Both Koreans entered in Paris An (29) and Jeon(30) are somewhat hampered by low snatches, but are perhaps capable of 245-250kg CJ. I’m interested in seeing what Aleksanyan(21) ARM will do, being extremely fast and explosive seems to be a prerequisite to lift for Armenia. Shymechko (25) UKR has improved slowly over the last 3 yrs. Seeing him snatch at the 2008 Euros I made a prognostication that he had a chance of perhaps in 4 yrs by London 2012, snatch 215kg, provided he bulks up a bit but he’s behind schedule(grin). Final entry for the 2011 World Weightlifting Championship Posted

IWF final entry list

Demanov Andrey RUS 94kg

Demanov Andrey RUS 94kg will lift at Paris world weightlifting championship

For the OL enthusiast and photographer this list is important

I was anxious to see the lineup for the 105 kg class, I can only say its left me a little disappointed and  scratching my head. I am perhaps the world’s worst prognosticator for who will attend world championships. See previous blog post I guess it was all wishful thinking, but should still be compeitive.
The IWF reports that participation at the 2011 Worlds will break all records 700+ athletes from 101 nations. In the 94kg category there are 63 entries, yikes.

Andrei Rybakou is entered at 2011 World weightlifting Championship

I am excited to see Rybakou entered. I’ve waited through four major championships to see Rybakou again (2008 European championship , the 2009, 2010 and 2011 World championships). I really hope he is standing on the stage when the 85kg class lines up for introductions, because the reality is  an entry doesn’t always turn into actually lifting. The last time I saw him was in Thailand where he set the snatch world record.

The photo sequence is from a book I published, the “86” is a page number in case you were wondering. See Blog post
The snatch has always been Rybakou’s forte, so much so that I saw competition results as a Jr where his lifts were 180kg snatch and 190 kg CJ. The 2006 worlds saw him do 180 + 203, 2007 worlds 187 + 206 and 2008 Olympics 185 + 209. My point is to illustrate that over the years it appears he has made a concerted effort to improve his CJ. Where will his lifts be in 2011 ???

In Thailand 2007 I took some digital negatives on a flash card to the local print shop. It was an experiment to see how well I could proof prints in my laptop.(you can’t TRULY proof a print unless you have the “color profile” of the printer that is used to make the print). It wasn’t particularly good (I have very high standards as to what a print should look like) Anyway, I picked up the prints on my way to the competition hall. Outside the hall I came across Rybakou walking through the local vendor area outside the hall. He was kind enough to sign a print, the day after he lifted the WR. That was cool!  P.S. I always give a lifter a print.

Marcin Dolega POL 105kg out of 2011 World Championship

A shoulder injury (rotator cuff) will prevent Marcin from competing at the 2011 World Weightlifting Championship early November in Paris. He also reportedly had stem cell injections to a knee in 2009, so this four year Olympic cycle has been tough with injuries. His teammate Bartlomiej Bonk this September did 410kg via 190kg sn and 220kg cj  so he may well be an able Polish replacement in the medal hunt. Dolega won the 2010 worlds with a 415kg total.

The deck is stacked this year with a multitude of possible champions;  Akkaev (RUS) who won the Europeans with 425kg and perennial medalist Klokov (RUS) did 427kg in July and has had some big lifts in training and will also be a factor. At the same Russian nationals Smorchkov did 420kg and Bedzhanyan 415 kg. Russia will enter two lifters but who will Rigert pick?  Ilya Ilin  has now reappeared after a 3 year hiatus and this September did 416kg via 186 sn and 230kg cj as a 105kg. There is even a rumour that  the 2004 Olympic champion Dmitry Berestov is training for London, does that mean he will possibly be at Paris? The field will be perhaps one of the strongest in years. Add two Ukrainian lifters lifters to the mix; Torokhtiy did 420kg and teammate Ivanov up from the 94kg class did 415kg.

Aramnau BLR the 2008 Olympic champion with a 436kg total appears to be back after serving suspensions from both his federation and the IWF. My prediction is that  at least 430kg will be needed to win gold. In any case this class will be a war.
